Unique threats to human safety: Predatory wildlife
August, 2007
With a broad focus on human safety and risk mitigation, the Canpro team has the expertise and capacity to provide customized solutions to unique challenges. As an example of the diversity of our services, over the course of this summer Canpro assisted two resource based clients enhance the safety of staff who work alone in isolated wilderness settings and are exposed to threats from predatory wildlife.
Both clients deploy workers in isolated northern locations where the risk of attack from large, predatory animals is very real, and can prove fatal. While many similar employers provide their staff with firearms and some basic target practice, our clients sought to take a more comprehensive and proactive approach to staff safety while practising responsible resource stewardship by conserving wildlife at the same time.
For these clients, Canpro developed a highly experiential multi-day training program which developed new knowledge and practical skills in a dynamic setting. Wilderness situational awareness was stressed within the context of high-risk environments, while focusing on practical strategies to limit high-risk wildlife contacts. While staff were provided extensive, hands-on firearms safety training, along with dynamic shooting exercises, they were also taught how to warn animals away without having to destroy predators.
Understanding the complex risks associated with deploying firearms in the workplace, even in wilderness settings, Canpro worked closely with client corporate risk managers and counsel to develop appropriate, detailed policies covering firearms acquisition, storage, use, and reporting.
