Human Safety in Healthcare
October, 2007

Over the past several years, amongst other human safety and security client groups, the Canpro Global group of risk mitigation companies has developed a particular level of expertise specific to human safety in the healthcare field. This includes training, security consulting, and risk assessments for quite varied groups of healthcare professionals across British Columbia.

Last month, Canpro Training Resources presented a workshop on workplace violence mitigation at the British Columbia Healthcare Workplace Health, Safety and Wellness Conference in Kelowna. This interactive session utilized a holistic, cross-systems approach to prevention, response, and meeting the needs of staff, patients and public in the aftermath of violent events.

Currently, Canpro is working with local health group to conduct a 360 degree assessment of workplace violence risk, and context-appropriate mitigation strategies, in a large urban Emergency Department. This work continues to build on prior related workplace violence risk assessments conducted in healthcare by Canpro.

At the same time, Canpro is working with a different health region to identify in a defensible manner, and on an evidence-based examination of data, actual contracted security service needs. This project is examining actual security needs, deployment and staffing models, and proposed return on security investment. In this project, of particular importance to the client is that not only must any contracted security service be professionally delivered, and protect the health, well being and safety of patients, visitors, and staff, as well as protect the assets and physical infrastructure of the healthcare group, it must also fit within the unique mission, vision and values of the organization.
