Canpro embarks on new initiatives: isolated Canadian communities, and
Africa
February, 2008
On behalf of Health Canada, Canpro this month piloted a new program on
personal safety and workplace violence mitigation for nursing staff
working in isolated communities. Focusing on planning and preparing for
personal safety, situational awareness, recognition of threat cues,
triggers of violence, and verbal/spatial strategies and skills for
defusing/de-escalating incidents of concern, this dynamic one-day
workshop was extremely well reserved, and will soon be delivered in
additional remote and northern communities for Health Canada
professionals.
Working with the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, the United
Nations Mission in Sudan, and the International Centre for Criminal Law
Reform (a UN affiliate body), Canpro began participating this month in a
long-term prison reform and capacity building project in southern Sudan.
On this first two-week trip, Canpro staff participated in an initial
needs assessment, and co-delivered a newly created four-day workshop
focusing on human rights and vulnerable groups in prisons. Over fifty
national leaders from the Southern Sudan Prison Service attended this
learning event.
