Who is at Risk of Violent Attack in the Workplace
Typically, workers most at risk from workplace violence are those who engage in the following work related activities/roles:
- Handling money, valuables, medications
- Have close contact with the public in situations where staff provide direction, care, advice, training, or deliver news/information that the public may react negatively to
- Carry out inspection, investigation, or enforcement activities
- Work alone when in contact with the public, especially staff working at night
- Work in isolated settings
- Work with or in proximity to emotionally or mentally disturbed persons, or persons who's moods are altered by drugs and/or alcohol
- Work in settings where alcohol is served or available, or in geographic areas with a significant numbers licensed premises
- Work with persons who have a history of violence
Variables that can impact on the nature and level of risk include worker training and skills, workplace direction and policies, workplace design, history of related incidents in the local area and in similar industries.
